Martha had traveled 160 miles from Jonglei state to Yei River County to attend school at Excel International Academy. She showed much bravery by leaving home and traveling so far in search of a high school education. It was at Excel, in 2012, that we met Martha and began sponsoring her.

Martha was always a well performing student, consistently placing in the top ten of her class. Her academic achievements helped to motivate her peers. It was not uncommon to find Martha sitting under a tree, surrounded by notebooks, reviewing lessons, and preparing for the next day’s classes.

After passing her national exams and graduating from Excel, Martha returned to her home state. Her goal is to continue her education at university. While saving for tuition, Martha is doing domestic work and applying for jobs with non-governmental organizations in the Bor area.

Anita asked Martha this week, “What do you ultimately want to do?” She replied, “Any job that will serve my nation and bring change to the community.” We believe in her potential to do so.
