The Africa ELI Board of Directors is pleased to announce the promotions of Mr. Alemi Charles and Ms. Zaharah Namanda to the positions of Co-Directors, effective July 1, 2019. They have demonstrated a caring commitment to the young people we serve, and have proven time and again that they are decisive, creative, and adaptable in situations of uncertainty and rapid change. Additionally, they have maintained programmatic and financial accountability to our board members. Charles has a long history with Africa ELI and keen expertise in operations. Zaharah’s civic engagement and social advocacy shines a light on the importance of education in building stronger communities. This progression in leadership has been a long-standing goal for Africa ELI. It has always been our desire to move from international to local leadership for the benefit of program sustainability. In the coming weeks, Charles and Zaharah will be announcing a new board of directors based in our Ugandan host community of Kampala. They will initiate fundraising from there, and all programming will be developed there. We believe these changes represent the best of what it means to participate in effective international development.
Every donation received from friends like you has manifested into a personal connection with a young person from South Sudan. The impact of donor gifts is immediate and provides the necessities for each student to thrive at school. Now, more than ever, let’s throw our collective support behind Charles and Zaharah as a sign of our continued commitment toward educating South Sudan’s rising generation. If all of us work to raise $25,000 by July 15, then the students can successfully complete Term 2 and begin Term 3 of this academic year.
In the U.S., Executive Director Anita Henderlight will transition to a voluntary Senior Advisor role working with a small Advisory Council. They will backstop the new leadership by continuing to manage all stateside donations, which are processed in the U.S. by our partner agency, Network for Good. Our status as a 501(c)3 charitable organization will be maintained so that your tax-deductible contributions can be received by mail or online.
