Visitation Day is an important monthly event for boarding school students. Teachers and school administrators meet with the students’ parents or guardians to review the academic performance and activities of individual students. A school bursar provides an accounting of student expenses and alerts parents to upcoming fee-based events such as field trips or regional tournaments for clubs or teams. Entertainment is sometimes provided. Choirs might sing; traditional dances may be performed; and art projects may be on display. A significant highlight of Visitation Day is the opportunity for parents to deliver favorite foods and snacks to their children. A bag of sugar to sweeten their tea is a popular request. Special dishes made of chicken, beef, or goat served with gravy are always well-received. Students may be treated to sweet cakes and sodas such as Fanta, Coke, or Sprite. Visitation Day is also an opportunity for students to have scholastic or personal supplies replenished. Perhaps more washing detergent or toothpaste is needed, or lost pens require replacements. Africa ELI’s Monitoring and Program Officer, Alemi Charles, delivered some necessary school supplies during March’s Visitation Day. He also brought plates of chicken for our girls. Please take 30 seconds to watch an Africa ELI student’s response to Charles’ visit.
