What does it take to raise bright, confident girls? How does Africa ELI manage to support young female refugees who have fled armed conflict in South Sudan? Who listens and responds to the girls when they want to talk outside of the classroom about topics important to them?

“It takes a village to raise a child” is an old African proverb. We know that’s a true statement. Leaders, teachers, parents, and community members need to work in concert to offer young people the needed tools for well-being and good health.

In this video, you get a front row seat to meet the man and woman who share the responsibility of caring for Africa ELI girls every day, every week, for four years at a time. They are Charles and Zaharah. They offer our girls a listening ear and advice when needed, they supply our girls with educational resources, and they build relationships to surround our Africa ELI girls with encouragement and love. Our staff persevere in raising girls to become strong, educated women who are equipped to reach their life goals.

So, for the next 17 minutes, sit back, relax, and take this opportunity to meet Africa ELI staff, Charles and Zaharah, in an impromptu, casual conversation filmed just a few weeks ago in Uganda.

If you would like to help Charles and Zaharah carry out their extraordinary and meaningful work, please consider donating to Africa Education and Leadership Initiative at www.africaeli.org.

Our Mission

By providing access to education, Africa ELI prepares young women in South Sudan to become leaders in their families and communities, engage in business enterprise, counteract inequalities, improve health practices, and work toward improving society for the benefit of all citizens.
