Africa ELI recently attended a dinner sponsored by the African Women and Girls Organization (AWGO) in Kampala, Uganda. The dinner was a red-carpet event launching a series of public forums on women’s issues organized by AWGO. It was attended by 150 community members from the private, governmental, and academic sectors. Four panelists from the community were on hand to share information about their contributions in promoting women’s rights and gender equity. In response, audience members were invited to ask questions and offer feedback about how to continue shining a spotlight on creating a gender-balanced world.

Africa ELI’s Zaharah Namanda was one of the panelists. Alemi Charles joined Zaharah in accepting, on behalf of Africa ELI, a certificate of appreciation for “commendable work, support, and services offered to girls and women to achieve their full potential.” Zaharah herself received individual recognition for her work in women’s education and reproductive health, civic engagement, and social advocacy. The presentations were made by Dr. Maggie Kigozi, a Ugandan medical doctor, business consultant, educator, and former Executive Director of the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA), 1999-2011. We want to thank Judith Nassali and Racheal Tusiime of AWGO for their warm hospitality and for recognizing the accomplishments of Africa ELI in educating girls and women. We are excited to continue moving forward as partners in such important work.
