To shine a light on some positive news from South Sudan, we have curated content this week to share with you. It’s easy to find negative news about sub-Saharan Africa, especially South Sudan. However, if you search beyond the headlines, there are people and stories that deserve attention for good work being accomplished. We have spotlighted a few of those gems here.

Good-bye Guinea Worm!

Guinea worm disease has been eradicated in South Sudan through clean water initiatives and other interventions organized by South Sudan’s Ministry of Health and the The Carter Center. One South Sudanese woman, Mrs. Regina Lotubai Lomare Lochilangole, wrote a song and created a dance to teach others about symptoms and prevention of the blistering disease. Her creativity earned her an “Unsung Hero Award.” To read about the end of guinea worm disease in South Sudan and Regina’s song and dance, follow this link: https://bit.ly/2puFIl0

They are Children, Not Soldiers

A group of international partners called the Group of Friends of Children and Armed Conflict is addressing grave violations against South Sudan’s children, including child soldiering. Canada and agencies at the United Nations are co-leading the initiative. “Working with all the armed actors in the prevention of violations, including by supporting resilient programs targeting children who have been released from armed groups, can be good incentives for peace in South Sudan,” said Alan Hamson, the Canadian Ambassador to South Sudan. Kids for Wildlife

They want the animals to stay! South Sudanese young people participating in the Wildlife Awareness School Campaign are calling for an end to fighting in their homeland to protect the elephants, giraffes, and hippopotamuses. Read the article and hear a radio clip here: https://bit.ly/2pAWLC9
