Each student is required to have lesson notes for every subject taught at school. When Africa ELI students fled from conflict in South Sudan to the safety of Uganda, most of their school notebooks were left behind. Knowing how important these subject notes are for our students’ academic success, Africa ELI staff got to work. This past week, we recreated and copied over 9,800 pages of notes at the Makerere University print shop, then distributed them to the students.

World Book Day is a yearly event held on April 23rd, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, to promote reading, publishing and copyright. In observance of World Book Day, Africa ELI staff read with our students and encouraged them to write their own stories. The two books we read together were Malala’s Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai andWhat Do You Do With a Chance? by Kobi Yamada. To help the students with writing their stories, Anita and Zaharah handed out new blue pens.
